We here at The NYRD are geeks through and through, but we have often resented the fact that geeks are not supposed to like sports. On the contrary, we could not be more excited for the coming football extravaganza taking place this weekend. In fact, we are so excited about our Sunday of nacho dip, over-the-top commercials, and friendly -though technically illegal- betting, that we decided to show our love through comics. Hey, we’re still geeks.
The world of DC Comics is full of fantastic and “super” heroes, but with an equally “super” football game coming up, we here at The NYRD though it would be fun to take some of those fictional DC cities and envision what their football teams might look like. Our artists designed eight helmets, drawing from the DC Comics New Earth timeline -because of course- and they even made a few original teams inspired by some of those fictional hometowns of your favorite superheroes. Click on the gallery below to check out our newest creations as you get ready for this Sunday’s big game. See if you can spot the inspiration for each team’s football logo, and if you like what you see don’t forget to check out The NYRD Shop to find some more inspired football and DC mash ups.
Game on!
DCFL Football Teams
The Fawcett City Wizards take their name from an old legend about a wizard that once took pity on the city and used his magic to create an urban paradise where once there was only decay. They are one of the newest expansion teams, created only in the past few years.
Gotham has had a number of football teams over the years. Some moved to other cities, some were shut down because of corruption, but the name Gotham City Wildcats has been around since the great old city first got into the professional football game. This latest incarnation was made possible through generous investments from Wayne Enterprises.
One of the newer expansion teams, the Gateway City Warriors have proven their might over the past few seasons, even challenging the powerhouse Metropolis Metros for the division championship. They have proven determined to live up to their namesake.
The Star City Stags are a staple for the west coast city. There was a time when the city had two competing teams. The former Metropolis Comets tried moving to Star City, but flagging ticket sales and poor draft picks proved that Star City has and always will be Stag Country.
The Coast City Sharks have a reputation of being an unlucky team. Formerly the Dakota City Sharks, the team was moved to Coast City after a failing Dakota economy nearly bankrupted the franchise. Unfortunately, the Sharks' stadium had not been constructed for more than two years when Coast City was destroyed by the intergalactic criminal, Mongul, effectively finishing what the downturned economy had started.
The Metropolis Metros are one of the original teams in professional football. They are considered a powerhouse, having won several divisional and national titles. The Metros are legendary in professional football, partially due to the generous support of several wealthy owners, most notably Lex Luthor. With a tradition of talent and great coaching ability the Metros often advance to the post season on an annual basis.
Not an original team, but one of the first expansion teams in professional football, the Central City Cougars have created a steady and impressive record over the years. The team often favors their running game over passing, a tactic that has helped them win the fourth most national titles in the league.
The Midway City Cardinals are one of the oldest teams in football, and one of the most well traveled. Created in Chicago, before moving to St. Louis, then a brief stopover in Arizona, the Cardinals finally found a permanent nesting spot in Midway City . They are the pride of Midway with fans known for enjoying a good fight or two in support of their team.
