Lionsgate has said that it is currently testing young talent in hopes of finding up-and-coming actors and actresses who they will cast in their reboot of the Power Rangers franchise. Currently, they just announced the casting of Naomi Scott, who recently had a role in The Martian. Scott will be playing the Pink Ranger, -because apparently color-wise that needs to be a woman’s role.
Everything else is still in development. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz have been tapped to write the script, while Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur are marked down as producers.
The story will be a new take on the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of teenagers, who are neither mutant nor turtle, but vaguely ninja. In the old 1993 show the teens are brought together by a floating head to fight an extraterrestrial witch in a mishmash of cheap Japanese stock footage montages.
The original Fox Kids TV series became a hit and sparked a pop culture phenomenon, so it is only natural that Hollywood would once again look to pump Millennial nostalgia to try and make a new cash cow. Rest assured this live-action movie, based on Saban’s Power Rangers property, will be the first film in a series.
The movie is currently slated for theaters on January 13, 2017.
